Decades ago North America’s first Great War began on a global scale and so did our fight against tyranny. Since then, countless men and women have stood shoulder to shoulder each year to make a stand. They stood strong – a force that would not be broken or bent by the evil that comes to the door. We have taken the fight to the enemy and defended those who were unable to defend themselves. We stood beside our allies on foreign soil to face those who would take away the freedom and very lives of those who stood in their way in their pursuit of domination at all costs. Today, the heart of evil has come to our homes and our communities. It is no longer the enemy abroad but it is our fellow citizens and our neighbours. And again we call upon the men and women who serve proudly in our various branches of military to answer that call. Proudly donning uniforms which symbolize our pursuit of freedom and honour, they defend our way of life around the world and at home. As we look into the eyes of the veterans who remain to tell the stories and honour those we have lost, have you wondered about the stories we may never hear? There is an unspeakable bond that ties the past and present over the ages – a line that stretches from ancient warriors to today’s new recruits. Behind the eyes of these warriors are the memories of fallen comrades, brothers and sisters, who will live on in the hearts of those who survived. But with that willingness to carry those memories in their hearts comes a price. Their willingness to never forget means those invisible scars will remain, only to burn hot on anniversaries like Remembrance Day. As we remember the fallen, reach out to those who carry them in their hearts as theirs is a heavy burden they willingly take on without hesitation. Help share that task in honouring our heroes and let the living know they are not alone. To the men and women who have given all, we give our heartfelt thanks as we can never repay such a debt. To the family and friends who remain, our thoughts and prayers are with you as you remember your loved ones.
